Philippine national men’s 3x3 wheelchair team advances to ASEAN Para Games semifinals

The Pilipinas Warriors booked a semifinal spot at the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Jan. 19, following convincing wins over Indonesia and Malaysia. Led by captain Kenneth Tapia alongside Alfie Cabañog, Jannil Cañete, and Fel Lander Dawal, the men’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team dominated Indonesia 20-3 in their opening match, with Tapia contributing nine points.

In their second game the same day, the Pilipinas Warriors defeated Malaysia 11-7, with Alfie Cabañog scoring seven points. Head coach Vernon Perea said that the early victories were crucial in building momentum for the team. “In the first match, we had Alfie and Kenneth running the game very smoothly so iniwan lang natin. We got the chance to finish it early kasi we’re expecting a close match against Malaysia,” he explained.

Men’s team pushes for top seed

The team went on to face host Thailand to determine the tournament’s top seed. Their strong performances in the opening games have positioned them as serious contenders for the semifinals. The Warriors displayed tactical precision, effective teamwork, and resilience under pressure, key factors in their campaign.

Maintaining focus during critical moments allowed the Pilipinas Warriors to capitalize on scoring opportunities and assert control. Their disciplined approach and ability to execute under pressure are giving them an edge as they aim for a finals berth.

Lady Warriors face must-win scenario

The women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball squad, the Pilipinas Lady Warriors, had a more challenging start. They lost 2-14 to Thailand and 5-8 to Laos, placing them in a must-win situation to reach the finals. National team coach Harry Solanoy said the team must defeat Laos by at least four points if Thailand wins, as the lowest-ranked team will not receive a bronze medal.

Despite the setbacks, the Lady Warriors are determined to improve performance and remain in contention. Solanoy emphasized that execution, teamwork, and focus will be crucial in the upcoming games to secure a spot in the finals.
