Gilas Pilipinas Women delivered when it mattered most on Friday, December 19, defeating host Thailand 73-70 to reclaim the gold medal in the women’s basketball tournament at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok. The team forced a missed three-point attempt at the buzzer, responding to chants of “Defense! Defense!” from Filipino supporters.

Veteran captain Afril Bernardino led the effort with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Kacey Dela Rosa added 17 points and 16 boards. Sophia Dignadice contributed 10 points and two assists, helping Gilas Women return to the top of the podium after winning silver in the previous SEA Games.

The Philippines held a 50-43 halftime lead and extended it to 55-43 midway through the third quarter. Thailand mounted a comeback, closing the gap to 58-65 entering the final period and cutting the lead to 72-70 with a 7-0 run.

Leadership delivers in the title game

Chuck Cabinbin’s free throw gave Gilas Women a 73-70 cushion with 16.9 seconds remaining. A shot clock violation by the Philippines gave Thailand one last chance, but Kanokwan Prajuapsook’s final three-point attempt missed at the buzzer, sealing the gold medal for the Filipinas.

Coach Patrick Aquino praised his players for their effort and resilience, highlighting the difficulty of winning on foreign soil. The victory also marked Aquino’s third SEA Games gold, following previous wins in Manila (2019) and Hanoi (2022).

Holding off Thailand’s late surge

Thailand received 17 points and six rebounds from Supavadee Kunchuan, with Rattiyakorn Udomsuk and Prajuapsook combining for 31 points. Despite the hosts’ late surge, Gilas Pilipinas Women maintained their composure and secured the win.
