Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino expressed confidence that Team Philippines will secure more gold medals in the final three days of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok. Tolentino personally visited athletes at various venues to show support and assess their readiness for key competitions.

Several Filipino athletes are set to compete in events where the country has traditionally excelled, and Tolentino believes they are poised for a strong finishing push.

Strong finish expected from Filipino athletes

“Marami pa ‘yan. Itong last three days mabibigat mga ‘yan. Nandiyan ‘yung peak. Ang tingin ko diyan 15 up pa. Kasi nakakatlo na, apat. Mamaya isa, lima, sampu na lang. Basketball, boxing, speedskate lahat ‘yan may pag-asa,” Tolentino said. He added that host Thailand remains a competitive factor but expressed optimism about the Philippines’ medal chances.

Tolentino noted that the expected surge from Filipino athletes highlights the nation’s continuing progress in regional sports. Team Philippines currently holds 32 golds, 46 silvers, and 100 bronze for a total of 178 medals, overtaking Malaysia’s 31-35-91 and 157 total.

Medal tally and overall progress

Beyond individual performances, Tolentino emphasized that the country’s overall medal standings reflect consistent growth in regional competitions. The Filipino athletes’ strong showing demonstrates both depth and resilience as the Games enter the final stretch.

The last three days are expected to feature crucial events where the Philippines can add significantly to its gold medal count, with basketball, boxing, and speedskating among the sports offering medal opportunities.
