CHONBURI — Elreen Ando delivered a dominant performance to secure the Philippines’ first gold medal in weightlifting at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games on Monday, December 15. The Cebu native lifted 98 kilograms in the snatch and 127 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 229 kilograms, winning the women’s 63kg category at the Chonburi Sports School.
This victory marked Ando’s second SEA Games gold, following her success in the 59kg division at the 2023 Games in Cambodia. The Philippine weightlifting team also celebrated their first gold of the tournament after a silver from Albert Delos Santos in the men’s 71kg event the previous day.

Snatch test keeps Ando focused
Although favored after winning a bronze medal at the World Championships last October, Ando experienced initial nerves during the snatch. Her first two attempts barely cleared 96kg and 98kg before she successfully lifted 102kg, demonstrating her ability to stay composed under pressure.
Ando credited her training and mental preparation for helping her overcome the early jitters. “I told myself I can do this, and I just lifted it as practiced,” she said, reflecting her focus and determination.
Clean and jerk secures gold
In the clean and jerk, Ando failed her first attempt at 123kg but successfully completed the lift on her second try, effectively sealing the gold medal. She then added four more kilograms on her final lift to assert her dominance, with teammates, including Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz, cheering from the sidelines.
Coach Ramon Celis praised Ando’s composure and execution under pressure. Ando emphasized her goal for the gold, saying, “Pagdating sa clean and jerk, kailangan ko kunin ‘yung gold para may gold naman tayo ngayon,” underscoring her determination to deliver for Team Philippines.
Competition podium and results
The battle for the medals was close, as Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien of Vietnam took silver with a total of 219 kilograms. Thailand’s Thanaporn Saetia claimed bronze with a 218-kilogram total, finishing just behind Ando in a tight contest.
Ando’s performance not only secured the Philippines’ first gold of the Games but also reaffirmed her status as one of Southeast Asia’s premier weightlifters. Her success provided a strong start for Team Philippines’ campaign and set the tone for the remainder of the competition.
