NONTHABURI — Alex Eala booked her spot in the SEA Games women’s singles final after defeating Thailand’s Thasaporn Naklo, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals on Tuesday, December 16, at the National Tennis Development Centre. The 20-year-old top seed overcame a second-set challenge after trailing 0-2, demonstrating composure under pressure in front of a lively Filipino crowd.
Eala’s win guarantees her at least a silver medal and keeps her hopes alive to claim the country’s first gold in women’s singles since Maricris Fernandez-Gentz in 1999. Naklo’s strong service game made for a competitive second set, but Eala’s timely surge gave her the edge at 5-3, ultimately closing out the match in the 10th game.

Overcoming resistance on center court
Women’s team head coach Denise Dy praised Eala for her resilience and tactical execution. “I think her opponent is a very experienced player. Alex definitely handled the center court very well,” said Dy, a two-time SEA Games gold medalist.
Dy highlighted Eala’s ability to respond to pressure. “Her opponent battled back strongly in the second set, but Alex was able to respond and close it out, which was very important for her,” she added.
The win showcased Eala’s poise and adaptability, key qualities that will be tested in the final against another home bet, Manachaya Sawangkaew, on Thursday, December 18.
Eyes on double duty
Before competing for gold in the singles final, Eala will also contest the mixed doubles semifinal alongside partner Niño Alcantara on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Balancing both events demonstrates her stamina and determination to maximize the Philippines’ medal haul in tennis.
Eala’s performances signal a potential historic achievement for Philippine tennis, with her finals appearances in both singles and mixed doubles reflecting maturity and confidence beyond her years.
