The Philippine women’s futsal team fell 7-1 to host Thailand in their opening match of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games at Bangkok Thonburi University. Regine Rebosora put the Filipina5 ahead with nine minutes remaining in the opening quarter, converting a Dionesa Tolentin attempt to give the Philippines an early lead.
Thailand responded immediately, with Arriya Saetoen equalizing just 30 seconds later. The hosts then surged ahead, scoring six more goals, including two before halftime, leaving the Philippines trailing 1-3 in Group A. Paerploy Huajaipetch and Jenjira Bubpha contributed to the Thai scoring, with Bubpha’s goal coming from a rebound after a saved penalty kick.
Thailand dominates the match
Despite the Filipina5 holding their own in the early stages of the second half, Thailand’s relentless offense proved too strong. By the 6:54 mark of the second half, the score had ballooned to 7-1. The loss underscored the challenge of facing the fourth-ranked team in the region and highlighted areas for improvement as the tournament continues.
Head coach Rafa Merino acknowledged Thailand’s strength while noting the Philippines’ initial performance. “The first 15 minutes, the Philippines played really well and stayed focused, but once Thailand scored the fourth goal, the team started thinking about tomorrow,” he said, emphasizing the need to regroup for upcoming matches.
Looking ahead to Malaysia
The Filipina5 aim to rebound in their next match against Malaysia on Saturday, December 13, at the same venue. Coming off a historic appearance at the FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup hosted by the Philippines weeks earlier, the team is looking to leverage that experience to secure a better result.
Merino and his squad are determined to keep medal hopes alive, focusing on regrouping and preparing for the challenges ahead in the round-robin stage of the SEA Games.
