The Philippine women’s team is leaning heavily on youth as it navigates the 33rd Southeast Asian Games. A new generation of Filipinas is stepping up on the regional stage and delivering vital performances to keep the squad in semifinal contention.
SEAG newcomer Mallie Ramirez, just 21, has emerged as the team’s most productive scorer so far. She struck in their opening 1-2 loss to Myanmar, then delivered the deciding goal in a hard-earned 1-0 victory over defending champion Vietnam that kept their campaign alive.
Her rise mirrors the wider youth movement powering the Filipinas. Jael Marie Guy and Alexa Pino, both 18, earned starting spots on the attack line against Vietnam and showed maturity beyond their years. Nineteen-year-old Isabella Pasion has likewise earned praise for her work rate and impact.

Youth movement takes center stage
Coach Mark Torcaso said he is proud of the composure and commitment shown by his young starters. He noted that the blend of newcomers and veterans created the right balance in their win over Vietnam, proving the squad’s depth.
Pasion has also been a standout presence, with Torcaso describing her as one of the most aggressive and reliable players he has coached. Her crucial defensive contribution against Vietnam underscored her growing importance to the national team.
Foundation for the future
Torcaso believes the emergence of this youth core bodes well for Philippine football’s long-term aspirations. With a significant group of players aged 18 to 23 now gaining high-level experience, the coach said the future looks promising for upcoming tournaments beyond the Asian Cup.
He added that advancing to the next stage of the SEA Games remains a priority, expressing confidence that this young lineup will be difficult for any opponent to handle if they reach the knockout rounds.
