Team Philippines enters Wednesday, Dec. 10, with renewed energy as WTA No. 52 Alex Eala joins the national tennis squad at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok. The 20-year-old standout returns for her second stint in the regional meet, three years after claiming three bronze medals in Vietnam.

Eala will also help lead the Philippine delegation in Tuesday night’s opening ceremony as one of the country’s flagbearers, sharing the honor with Alas Pilipinas star Bryan Bagunas. Her presence is expected to elevate the team’s confidence as the competition begins with the men’s and women’s team events.

PHILTA Secretary General John Rey Tiangco said the group has responded strongly to Eala’s arrival, noting that her participation has lifted the national delegation’s spirits ahead of a demanding campaign in Thailand. He believes the program can surpass its previous output with the momentum she brings.

Team looks to build on renewed momentum

Tiangco emphasized that both squads have prepared well for the Bangkok tournament, drawing motivation from Eala’s involvement on and off the court. He noted that her role as flagbearer resonates throughout the 1,600-strong Philippine delegation and sets the tone for the country’s competitive mindset.

The PHILTA official expressed optimism that tennis will continue to serve as a source of national pride, especially with the blend of seasoned athletes and rising talents reinforcing the lineup this year.
