UST-Gameville’s Josh Ybañez was named Spikers’ Turf Press Corps Player of the Week for November 5 to 7 after delivering stellar performances in the 2025 Invitational Conference.
The University of Santo Tomas-Gameville, returning to the tournament for the first time since 2018, has impressed despite joining as a late replacement. Their 3-1 record reflects the impact of Ybañez, whose versatility as an open spiker has been crucial.
Last Friday, Ybañez led the Golden Spikers to a grueling five-set victory over Alpha Insurance Protectors, 26-24, 25-22, 35-37, 19-25, 22-20. He scored 20 points on 18 attacks, one block, and one ace, while adding 30 excellent receptions in a match that tested both teams’ endurance.
“Of course, I’m always proud sa mga teammates ko. I’m so happy na we ended up getting the result that we want,” Ybañez said. “Gusto lang namin manalo, and sa kanila naman siguro… kailangan pa namin mag-ensayo ng maayos pa.”

Weekly honor and league recognition
Ybañez was a unanimous choice for the award, surpassing UST-Gameville teammates Al-Bukharie Sali and Edriel Alabar. Other contenders included Cignal’s Jay Rack Dela Noche, Criss Cross’ Jude Garcia and Noel Kampton, and Savouge’s Sherwin Caritativo.
The Spikers’ Turf Press Corps citation is deliberated by print and online reporters covering the pioneering men’s professional volleyball league.
Looking ahead for UST-Gameville
The Golden Spikers are set to face defending champion Cignal HD Spikers on Wednesday at Paco Arena, hoping to maintain momentum.
“I think it’s better if mag-focus muna kami sa sarili namin because pag focus kami and alam namin yung ginagawa namin sa court as a team, may laban naman kami lagi sa kung sino mang kalaban,” said Ybañez.
UST-Gameville will soon have to adapt without their standout spiker, as Ybañez is joining national team training for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games. The reigning UAAP MVP expressed gratitude for the chance to contribute as an attacker before returning to his natural role as libero.
“Next week, mag-start na kami ng training. So, I’m making the most of it, sa spiker era ko, and balik na kasi ako sa pagiging libero. Ine-enjoy ko lang yung time na pumapalo pa ako,” Ybañez said.
