Mindanao Sports Summit in Marawi highlights unity and peace through athletics

MARAWI CITY—The Mindanao Sports Summit, hosted by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in partnership with the Bangsamoro Sports Commission (BSC) and Mindanao State University (MSU), convened key stakeholders to discuss sports as a driver for peace and development.

The summit brought together athletes, coaches, government officials, and educators to focus on inclusive sports programs, women’s participation in athletics, coaching strategies, and media promotion. These discussions aim to shape a long-term roadmap for sports development in Mindanao.

Sports as a vehicle for peace and development

“Marawi is becoming a springboard for youth talent and community engagement,” said PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio. “This summit is about turning sports into a tool for unity, growth, and resilience.”

The summit highlighted Marawi City’s cultural identity, blending athleticism with the community’s creativity, faith, and spirit. BSC Chairperson Arsalan Daimaoden emphasized that sports can transform lives and promote solidarity.

Collaboration among stakeholders

Representatives from local government units, educational institutions, and sports organizations participated in workshops and panels. Key speakers included MSU System President Atty. Paisalin P. D. Tago, SPEAR Dean Mirian Aman, and Philippine Sports Institute’s Pearl Managuelod.

Athletic leaders present included Karate Pilipinas president Richard Lim, Pilipinas Sepak Takraw Federation head Karen Caballero, Association of Boxing Alliances secretary general Marcus Manalo, and Philippine Amateur Baseball Association deputy secretary general Francis Diaz.

The summit fostered collaboration to strengthen community programs, ensuring sports initiatives reach youth across Mindanao. “Through sports, we can heal, connect, and inspire,” Daimaoden said. “Our efforts today build peace and solidarity for tomorrow.”
