Philippines wins silver and bronze as shuttlers advance at Asian Youth Games

At Khalifa Sports City, Jamesray Ajido added a silver medal to the Philippines’ growing tally, finishing the boys’ 100-meter freestyle in 55.11 seconds. Iran’s Mohammadmahdi Gholami touched the wall first in 54.75, while Hong Kong’s Lau Kin Hei James earned bronze with 55.23.

Ajido’s performance highlights the Filipino swimmers’ continued competitiveness on the regional stage, keeping the nation in contention in multiple events.

Diaz lifts bronze in weightlifting

Fourteen-year-old Alexsandra Ann Diaz, niece of Tokyo Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz, earned bronze in the girls’ 48kg weightlifting category at the Exhibition World Bahrain. She successfully lifted 92kg in the clean and jerk, placing behind China’s Lan Xinyi, who lifted 93kg, and Korea’s Kim Ju Gyong, who also lifted 92kg but succeeded on an earlier attempt.

Diaz recorded 88kg and 90kg lifts prior to her medal-winning 92kg attempt and finished fourth in the snatch with 70kg. Lan captured gold with 77kg, while Kim claimed silver with 76kg. “Masaya po kaso hindi ko po expect na mag-medal. Ang lakas ng mga kalaban,” Diaz said.

With Ajido and Diaz’s medals, the Philippines’ haul in the 45-nation meet rose to six gold, six silver, and seven bronze, placing the country eighth overall.

Filipino shuttlers advance in badminton

In badminton, Cris Ivan Dosano made it to the Round of 16 in boys’ singles after defeating Bahrain’s Ali Alashoor, 21-5, 21-9, and Kazakhstan’s Mustafa Malikzhan, 21-9, 21-12. Ron Ezekiel Zacarias also moved past the Round of 64, beating Ibrahim Hamdi of Maldives, 21-8, 21-11.

Eve Bejasa delivered solid performances in girls’ singles, advancing to the last 16 with victories over Bangladesh’s Margaret Biswas, 21-9, 21-4, and Cambodia’s Mak Nitajulie, 21-6, 21-6. Meanwhile, Cristel Fuentespina bowed to Hong Kong’s Liu Hoi Kiu, 21-12, 21-15, in the Round of 32.

In mixed doubles, John Lanuza and Rosheila Quierez were eliminated by Indonesia’s Abdul Azib and Fiersha Shafa, 21-11, 21-15, showcasing the challenge posed by powerhouse opponents.
