Disney+ subscribers in South Africa will gain access to ESPN Africa’s two 24-hour linear channels starting Oct. 2, 2025, at no extra cost. The expansion brings live coverage, studio programs, and documentaries from the world’s most iconic sports leagues and competitions.

ESPN will feature rugby and football action including Australia’s National Rugby League, Japan’s Rugby League, the Scottish Professional Football League, English Football League, Dutch Eredivisie, German Football Association Cup, Turkey’s SüperLig, and the Saudi Pro League.

On ESPN 2, fans will see American leagues such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL, alongside women’s and college sports including the NWSL, NCAA, and ESPN College Football. Studio shows “ESPN FC,” “First Take,” “The Pat McAfee Show,” and “SportsCenter” will also be included, along with the award-winning 30 for 30 documentary series.

Disney+ expands sports offering in South Africa

Diego Londono, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Networks & Sports, The Walt Disney Company EMEA, said the rollout reflects Disney’s mission to connect fans to world-class entertainment. “The launch of the ESPN Africa linear channels on Disney+ in South Africa reflects our strategy to reach sports fans across multiple platforms and connect with new audiences,” Londono said.

Kyle de Klerk, Director: Sports for The Walt Disney Company Africa, noted the addition comes at the right time. “Fans will be able to enjoy thrilling action right away as the European football season and the NFL have just launched, with existing milestones to look forward to in 2025 including the start of the NBA, NHL, as well as NCAA football and basketball leagues,” he said.

ESPN strengthens Disney+ content portfolio

The ESPN Africa channels will be available to all Disney+ Premium and Mobile plan subscribers in South Africa with an 18+ content rating. The new addition joins Disney+’s catalogue of entertainment from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Hulu, FX, Searchlight Pictures, and 20th Century Studios.

ESPN remains available via MultiChoice’s DStv and StarTimes across Africa, but its launch on Disney+ marks a new chapter in streaming access for South African sports fans.
