Terrence Romeo and Mac Tallo, two of the country’s most prolific scorers, are suiting up together for Manila Melmac in the FIBA 3×3 Manila Challenger on Sept. 20 to 21 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque.
Romeo, returning to the halfcourt format after 10 years, and Tallo, a former No. 1 3×3 player in the Philippines, will lead the Chico Lanete-coached squad alongside Abdul Sawat and 6-foot-10 big man Henry Iloka.
Romeo relishes return to 3×3 action
The flashy 5-foot-11 guard last starred in 3×3 a decade ago when he led Manila West to victory at the 2014 FIBA 3×3 World Tour Manila Masters. Now, Romeo sees this comeback as a chance to once again inspire Filipino fans.
“Expectations are always there, pero ang main goal namin is mag-compete and manalo,” Romeo said. “Excited ako kasi matagal na akong hindi nakapaglaro ng 3×3. This is the time to help our team and bring pride to the country.”
Manila Melmac opens its campaign against Chongming of China, bannered by Latvia’s Karlis Lasmanis, before facing Switzerland’s Lugano later in the night.
Tallo embraces challenge of playing with Romeo
For Tallo, the partnership with Romeo adds another layer of motivation.
“Sobrang saya kasi kumbaga parang isang threat, isang Mac Tallo iyong dumating. Mas na-pressure ako kasi gusto ko lumevel up sa laro ni Terrence,” Tallo joked, drawing laughter from Romeo.
He added that Romeo’s presence has helped him mentally and physically prepare for the grind of international 3×3 competition.
Romeo also credited the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and executive director Erika Dy for their support, saying it boosted the team’s confidence heading into the event.
