Laoag City made its strong support felt for the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Volleyball Championship as it hosted the Set Na Natin ‘To Trophy and Mascot Tour at the newly opened SM City-Laoag last Saturday. Cignal HD Spikers Josh Umandal, JM Ronquillo, and Vince Malinao headlined the stop, bringing excitement and anticipation for the upcoming world tournament.

The well-attended event did not stop inside the mall. At the nearby Dap-Ayan Park, Block Builders, powered by MVP John Paul Lorenzo, claimed victory in a mini-tournament against three other Ilocos Norte squads — North Western University, Laoag Men’s Team, and Pasuquin. The exhibition match was staged as part of the tour’s festivities.

Community welcomes the championship

Philippine National Volleyball Federation and Asian Volleyball Confederation president Ramon “Tats” Suzara expressed gratitude to the city and province for their warm hospitality and overwhelming support. Also present were Laoag City Vice Mayor Carlos Fariñas, Ilocos Norte volleyball association head Faivo Bartolome, and provincial sports consultant Joseph Co, who helped organize the successful event.

Adding flair to the festivities were the championship’s mascots, KidLat and Hataw, who delighted the crowd. Representatives from the Department of Tourism, SM City Laoag officials, and local grassroots players also took part in the activities, underscoring the community’s united effort to celebrate volleyball at its highest stage.

Countdown to the world stage

The 32-nation tournament officially kicks off on September 12 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with the Philippines facing Tunisia at 6 p.m. A first-of-its-kind opening ceremony will follow, featuring K-pop group BOYNEXTDOOR.

Running until September 28, the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Volleyball Championship promises high-level action and global fanfare.
