Defending champion Far Eastern University shrugged off a second-set slip to notch its second straight win, defeating reigning NCAA champion Arellano University, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, in the 2025 V-League Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, August 23, at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.
The Tamaraws leaned heavily on their middle game, especially during crucial stretches in the third and fourth sets. A quick hit from Lirick Mendoza pushed FEU to match point, before Dryx Saavedra sealed the win with a decisive transition attack.
Saavedra leads FEU’s balanced offense
Saavedra stood out with a game-high 19 points on 18 attacks, including the match-clincher. Amet Bituin chipped in 16 points, while Charles Absin anchored the front line with 12 markers off six attacks, five blocks, and a service ace.
Head coach Eddison Orcullo credited Arellano’s fight but stressed the need for sharper mental preparation moving forward. FEU (2-0) now targets a third consecutive victory against UAAP rivals National University Bulldogs (2-2) on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Despite the loss, Arellano captain Jiwen Sinuto matched Saavedra with 19 points. AC Guinto and Patrick Osabel added 10 points each as the Chiefs pushed FEU to four sets. The Chiefs (0-4) will aim to end their losing streak when they face De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (0-3) on August 30 at 3 p.m.
