Chengdu, China — Carlos Baylon Jr. delivered a stellar performance to capture the bronze medal in wushu sanda at the 2025 World Games, overpowering Kazakhstan’s Islam Karimov, 2-0, on Tuesday, August 12, at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium.
From the opening bell, Baylon set the pace with relentless aggression, landing multiple takedowns and showcasing sharp striking to neutralize Karimov’s offense. His dominance was evident throughout the bout, securing a convincing win for the Philippines.
“I am just happy to win this bronze medal,” said Baylon, who previously struck gold at the IWUF 10th Sanda World Cup in Jiangyin, China, last April. “I hope I can win more tournaments and give pride to our country.”
Strong finish for the Philippines’ wushu team
Baylon’s triumph capped the wushu team’s campaign in Chengdu on a high note after Krizan Faith Collado fell short in her bronze medal match against Vietnam’s Thi Phuong Nga Ngo.
With Baylon’s bronze and a silver from earlier in the competition, Team Philippines now holds two medals with five days remaining in the multi-sport event.
