The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have confirmed that the 21st Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa camp will take place at Petit Stade in Kigali, Rwanda, from August 23 to 26, 2025. This marks the first time the NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program will be held in East Africa, following previous editions in Angola, Egypt, Senegal, and South Africa.

This year’s BWB Africa camp will feature 60 of the continent’s top male and female players aged 18 and under, who will receive elite coaching and mentorship from current and former NBA, WNBA, and FIBA players, legends, and coaches. Alongside on-court training, participants will engage in leadership, life-skills, and social responsibility workshops aimed at shaping them into well-rounded athletes and leaders.

Rwanda’s growing basketball influence

NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi highlighted the event’s significance, noting the region’s rising momentum in basketball. “Basketball Without Borders Africa continues to provide a platform for top young players from across the continent to continue their development and reach the highest levels of the game,” she said.

FIBA Head of Players Unit Kimberley Gaucher emphasized Rwanda’s established basketball presence, citing its hosting of several major events in recent years. These include the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifiers, four Basketball Africa League Playoffs and Finals from 2021 to 2024, and the boys’ and girls’ FIBA U-16 AfroBasket tournaments, solidifying its status as a continental hub.

Proven track record of developing stars

Since its inception in 2001, BWB has reached over 4,600 participants from 144 countries and territories, producing 142 NBA and WNBA draft picks or free-agent signees. Fourteen of these are BWB Africa alumni, including 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid, 2019 NBA champion Pascal Siakam, and 2025 No. 10 overall pick Khaman Maluach. Seventy-two former campers have also played in the Basketball Africa League over its first five seasons.

Nike, a BWB global partner since 2002, will once again provide apparel and footwear for all participants in this milestone East African edition.
