De La Salle University launched its redemption campaign with a convincing 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 victory over Arellano University in the 2025 V-League Collegiate Challenge men’s division preliminaries on Sunday, August 10, at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center in Manila.
The 2023 champions, playing in front of former Green Spikers Menard Guerrero, Noel Kampton, Vince Maglinao, and JM Ronquillo, showed composure in crucial stretches, especially in a decisive third set that sealed the one-hour-and-23-minute sweep. La Salle is aiming to bounce back after falling to Far Eastern University in last year’s finals series.
Ousseini makes strong debut for La Salle
New recruit Issa Ousseini starred in his debut, tallying 14 points from seven attacks, four blocks, and three service aces. He received ample support from wing spikers Eugene Gloria and MJ Fortuna, who also finished with 14 points each. Gloria contributed nine spikes, three blocks, and two aces, while Fortuna registered 13 points off attacks and one block.
In the closing moments, back-to-back quick hits from Ousseini and team captain JJ Rodriguez restored La Salle’s cushion before a double contact violation on Arellano setter Daniel Agovida sealed the victory.
Bangit’s playmaking guides Green Spikers offense
Rookie setter Nathaniel Bangit was instrumental in La Salle’s offense, dishing out 20 excellent sets. He kept Arellano guessing by finding Gloria and Fortuna early before turning to his middle hitters to close out the match.
Arellano stayed competitive in each set behind AC Guinto’s offense, but La Salle’s strong finishes proved decisive. Guinto led the Chiefs with 13 points, while team captain Jiwen Sinuto added nine.
La Salle (1-0) will try to keep its momentum when it faces National University on Tuesday at noon. Arellano (0-2) will seek its first win against Letran on Sunday at 10 a.m.
