Adamson University made a triumphant return to the V-League Collegiate Challenge, shaking off an early slump to defeat the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-22, on Sunday, August 10, at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center.
After committing early errors and yielding the opening set, the Lady Falcons regrouped with dominant second and third frame wins, then fended off a determined fourth-set push from the Lady Altas to seal the victory in one hour and 16 minutes. Eloi Dote came up big in the closing stretch, firing consecutive hits to bring Adamson within two points of the win. A final block from Red Bascon on Pauline Reyes’ attack sealed the match despite Perpetual’s late rally.
Frances Mordi leads balanced Adamson attack
Frances Mordi spearheaded Adamson’s offense with 22 points from 17 attacks, two blocks, and three service aces, while also contributing six digs and 11 excellent receptions. Former Adamson high school standout Abegail Segui scored 17 points, and MG Del Moral chipped in eight in her collegiate debut. Team captain and setter Fhei Sagaysay orchestrated the offense with precision, keeping Perpetual’s defense on its heels.
Perpetual shows fight but falls short
Perpetual capitalized on Adamson’s early miscues to claim the first set, led by Shai Omipon’s attacks. However, they struggled to match the Lady Falcons’ balanced scoring and consistent floor defense in the middle sets. Omipon ended with 10 points, while Jernalyn Menor added nine.
Adamson head coach JP Yude praised the tournament as an opportunity to build chemistry and refine gameplay ahead of the UAAP season. “Dito mag-start ‘yung jelling ng team, especially ‘yung relationship nila inside and outside the court,” said Yude, emphasizing the importance of adjustments during the V-League as preparation for bigger competitions.
Adamson (1-0) next faces FEU on Tuesday at 5 p.m., while Perpetual (0-2) will try to bounce back against Mapua University (0-2) on August 16 at 10 a.m.
