The Philippines men’s floorball team got off to a difficult start at the 2025 World Games, absorbing a 12-2 defeat against European powerhouse Latvia on Thursday, August 7, at the Xindu Xiangcheng Sports Centre.
Simon Larano scored first for the Nationals off an assist from Melvin Mendoza, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 13th minute of the opening period. Despite the early fight, the Latvians quickly took control of the game and never looked back.
Mendoza would later add a consolation goal in the third period, showing the squad’s determination to battle until the final whistle. However, the size, speed, and depth of the Latvian team proved too much to overcome.

Latvia bounces back as Philippines eyes redemption
Latvia’s offense came from 12 different players, underlining the team’s overall firepower and discipline, especially after dropping a close 4-3 match to Switzerland the day before.
“Overall we had some chances which is a good sign. But against a good team like Latvia it is a lot different,” said Philippine head coach Noel Mendoza.
Floorball, a fast-paced indoor sport similar to ice hockey but with less gear and contact, remains in its development stage in the Philippines. Still, the Nationals showed flashes of potential despite the lopsided scoreline.
Backed by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, the team will look to regroup quickly for crucial matchups: Sweden on Saturday and Switzerland on Sunday.
A top-two finish in their group is required for the Philippines to move into the semifinals, and the team remains focused on bouncing back in their upcoming games.
