CHENGDU — Team Philippines enters the 2025 Chengdu World Games not as underdogs, but as bold contenders, according to Chef de Mission Stephen Arapoc, who is rallying behind the country’s 47-strong delegation.
Arapoc, who also serves as Muay Thai Association of the Philippines president, radiates quiet confidence ahead of the 11-day showcase of non-Olympic sports. While cautious not to overpromise, he’s clear about one thing — the Filipinos are ready to win.
“With teamwork and strong support from the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, there is no doubt we will produce champions here,” Arapoc said ahead of his arrival in the Chinese megacity on Wednesday.

Filipino athletes feel at home in Chengdu
With seasoned champions and rising stars in tow, the Philippine squad is soaking in the world-class hospitality of Chengdu, from the spacious Tianfu International Hotel Complex to the organized athlete village. The city’s warm welcome, reminiscent of Manila’s own weather, has helped the athletes settle quickly.
Wushu icons Agatha Wong and Jones Inso and wakeboarding standout Raph Trinidad were among the first to arrive on Tuesday, expressing delight at the quality of accommodations, food, and overall treatment.
“Food and room are great, so far everything is okay,” said floorball president Marco Ortiz, whose men’s team was the earliest to land in China to prepare for Thursday’s preliminary match against Latvia.
As of Wednesday, more members of the delegation — including the dragon boat squad, muay thai athlete Rudzma Abubakar, and the duathlon team led by Kim Mangrobang — have entered the Athletes’ Village, filling out the Philippine contingent.
With the opening ceremony fast approaching at the Tianfu International Convention Centre, Arapoc and company are focusing on unity, readiness, and national pride as the team prepares to wave the flag in the parade of nations.
