Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio personally supported Gilas Pilipinas Women in Shenzhen, China, during the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2025. His presence marked his first international trip since taking office and reflected the PSC’s strong alignment with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and its growing commitment to women’s basketball.
More than just a show of support, Gregorio’s trip included high-level meetings with FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Asia President Dr. K Govindaraj, and FIBA Asia Executive Director Hagop Khajirian. He was joined by SBP Executive Director Erika Dy to reinforce preparations for the country’s hosting of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2027.

Gregorio eyes long-term investment in women’s hoops
SBP President Al Panlilio expressed gratitude for Gregorio’s support, emphasizing how crucial it was to the country’s hosting efforts. Erika Dy noted that Gregorio was eager to understand how the PSC could invest in and strengthen the women’s basketball program moving forward.
“He saw the talent and the competitive fire from our athletes and wants to know how the PSC can help drive the program forward,” Dy added.
Gregorio also discussed potential opportunities for the Philippines to host more FIBA events in the future. He highlighted the benefits of decentralizing these events to boost sports tourism and enhance sports diplomacy.
Understanding eligibility and championing global Pinoy athletes
The PSC Chairman also took time to understand FIBA’s eligibility rules and expressed support for athletes of Filipino lineage competing internationally. He acknowledged the need for a more inclusive approach to allow these athletes, many of whom proudly represent the Philippines despite passport complications, to compete under the national flag.
“We know there are many athletes worldwide who proudly represent the Philippines even if some have not secured a Philippine passport before turning 16,” said Gregorio. “I support SBP in finding better solutions for Filipinos who have clear lineage to represent the country.”
Gregorio’s visit signals a stronger partnership between the PSC and SBP, with a shared goal of expanding basketball development and preparing for the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2027.
