The Akari Chargers wrapped up their PVL On Tour Pool B campaign in fighting form, staging a thrilling comeback in the third set to complete a 25-23, 25-18, 25-23 sweep of the Capital1 Solar Spikers on Tuesday (July 15) night at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The victory improved Akari’s record to 2-3, placing them fifth in the six-team group and keeping their quarterfinal hopes alive through the knockout phase. Despite missing out on a top-two finish, the Chargers will head into the next round with momentum and renewed confidence after a gutsy all-around performance.
Chargers bounce back from 21-12 hole in Set 3
After dominating Set 2, Akari fell behind 21-12 in the third frame as Capital1, led by Sydney Niegos, Rachel Austero, and Rovie Instrella, appeared poised to extend the match. But Akari mounted a stunning 13-2 closing run, triggered by timely adjustments and motivational cues from the coaching staff.
“There are moments when they just need to be reminded,” said Akari head coach Tina Salak. “We’re all skilled, but sometimes the mentality and attitude change when we’re trailing. Thankfully, they respond well to the system and encouragement.”
Soyud, Madrigal, Soltones lead balanced effort
Eli Soyud, the league’s Most Improved Player, top-scored with 12 points, while Ezra Madrigal added 11 markers, including three kill blocks. Grethcel Soltones chipped in nine points and 15 excellent digs, with Ivy Lacsina contributing eight points and 11 receptions.
Setter Kamille Cal orchestrated the offense with 22 excellent sets, along with five points, while libero Dani Ravena and rookie Max Juangco added stability on defense.
Capital1, playing without key players Bella Belen and Leila Cruz, dropped to 0-5. Niegos and Austero both scored 11 points, while Instrella had 10, but their efforts weren’t enough to prevent another collapse in crunch time.
The Solar Spikers exit the prelims still winless but showed flashes of promise to build on for future games.
