The stage is officially set for the 2025 BAL Finals, with Al Ahli Tripoli of Libya taking on Petro de Luanda of Angola in a highly anticipated championship clash on Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. CAT. The title game will take place at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, South Africa, serving as the grand finale of the Basketball Africa League’s (BAL) landmark fifth season.
Al Ahli Tripoli shines from deep to reach final
Al Ahli Tripoli earned their first-ever trip to the BAL Finals with a convincing 84–71 win over APR (Rwanda) in the semifinals. Fabian White Jr. powered the Libyan squad with 23 points and 7 rebounds, while Caleb Agada added 17 points. Al Ahli capitalized on their three-point shooting, hitting 12 of 29 (41.4%), compared to APR’s cold 4-for-18 from beyond the arc.
APR was led by Nuni Omot with 22 points, with Obadiah Noel, Chasson Randle, and Aliou Diarra contributing 13 points each. Despite their balanced effort, APR couldn’t overcome Al Ahli’s perimeter accuracy.
Petro de Luanda eyes back-to-back BAL championships
In the second semifinal, defending champions Petro de Luanda looked dominant as they defeated Al Ittihad (Egypt) 96–74. Kendrick Ray led all scorers with 21 points, while Aboubacar Gakou chipped in 17. The Angolan squad shot 40.7% from long range and went 85% from the free-throw line, showing their championship pedigree.
Al Ittihad struggled to keep pace, shooting just 5-for-26 from three-point territory. Lual Acuil led the Egyptian team with 16 points, but Petro’s offensive efficiency was too much to match.
Third-place match: APR vs Al Ittihad
Before the finals, APR and Al Ittihad will battle for third place on Friday, June 13 at 7 p.m. CAT, also at SunBet Arena. Both teams will aim to close their BAL 2025 campaigns on a high note after hard-fought semifinal losses.
As Petro de Luanda aims for a second straight title and Al Ahli Tripoli seeks their first championship, the 2025 BAL Finals promises a thrilling conclusion to a landmark season in African basketball history.
