NBA Africa and Opportunity International took a major step toward empowering African youth by inaugurating a new outdoor basketball court at Loiswell Academy in Nairobi, Kenya on May 27. The project is part of NBA Africa’s long-term commitment to construct 1,000 courts across the continent within the next 10 years.
Following a similar court launch in Nyamata, Rwanda just a week earlier, this latest development reinforces the initiative’s momentum. Both installations are designed to give young people better access to sports infrastructure, education, and personal growth opportunities.
Local Leadership And Global Partnerships Unite In Nairobi
The unveiling ceremony brought together global and local leaders including NBA Kenya Country Operations Lead Michael Finley and Opportunity International Executive VP Randy Kurtz. Also present were Opportunity International board member Ken Wathome, Loiswell Academy founder Lois Mbugua, and former NBA player Hasheem Thabeet.
Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit behind the project, which culminated in a Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA clinic for 100 children aged 16 and under. The clinic aimed to inspire a new generation of athletes while teaching values like teamwork and discipline.
Empowering Youth Through Access To Sport
Loiswell Academy’s new court is more than a place to play—it represents opportunity, community, and transformation. Through sports-based development, NBA Africa and Opportunity International aim to combat poverty by nurturing leadership, education, and resilience among African youth.
As part of this growing initiative, courts will continue to rise in underserved communities across Africa, offering safe spaces for children to learn, grow, and dream. This aligns with Opportunity International’s broader mission to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions for those facing systemic poverty.
