The Basketball Africa League (BAL) and Speak Up Africa joined forces to unveil a newly renovated basketball court in Yoff, Senegal, on the sidelines of the 2025 BAL Sahara Conference. This initiative is part of BAL and NBA Africa’s long-term commitment to develop youth sports infrastructure and health awareness across the continent.

The court, located in a densely populated area serving over 5,000 residents, now offers a safe, accessible space for youth to learn and play basketball. It was officially opened during a ceremony attended by Mouhamed Diop, Secretary General of the City of Dakar; Seydina Issa Laye Samb, Mayor of Yoff Community; Clare Akamanzi, NBA Africa CEO; and Amadou Gallo Fall, BAL President.

Following the unveiling, the BAL and Senegal-based health advocacy group Speak Up Africa hosted a basketball clinic and malaria prevention workshop for 50 local boys and girls aged 16 and under. This event coincided with World Malaria Day (April 25) and aimed to educate youth about malaria prevention, testing, and how to become ambassadors for health awareness in their communities.

“Today’s court unveiling, basketball clinic and malaria prevention workshop reflect our commitment to giving back to the communities where we operate,” said BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall. “We look forward to continuing to inspire, empower, and elevate youth in Senegal and across Africa through the game of basketball.”

The court project aligns with NBA Africa’s commitment to build 1,000 courts across Africa in the next decade, a promise to foster sports-based development, health advocacy, and youth empowerment throughout the continent.

City of Dakar Secretary General Mouhamed Diop echoed this sentiment:

“The inauguration of this court in Yoff symbolizes our ongoing commitment to sports and community development. This collaboration demonstrates our desire to create inclusive spaces where sport becomes a vector of education, social cohesion and fulfillment for all Dakar residents.”

The event highlighted the synergy between sports and sustainable development—an approach BAL continues to promote through its presence in Africa.
