Alex Compton names Kevin Racal, Ping Exciminiano as the best defenders he’s ever coached

In basketball, defense often takes a backseat to flashy offensive plays. But for Alex Compton, defense is just as essential to winning games and championships.

With nearly three decades of experience as a player and coach, the former PBA tactician has long embraced the value of defense, having led the multi-titled Alaska Aces from 2014 to 2019.

And it’s in this very team that Compton encountered the two best defenders he has ever coached: Kevin Racal and Ping Exciminiano.

“I feel like Ping Exciminiano was the best on-ball defender, and Kevin Racal was a solid on-the-ball defender, but he was the best off-the-ball defender,” Compton shared during his talk on defense at the Milcu Sports Got Skills Basketball Coaching Clinic last March 30 at the Greenhills West Clubhouse.

Kevin Racal: The Most Coveted Defender

Compton revealed that Racal’s defensive abilities were so highly regarded that opposing coaches frequently attempted to acquire him via trade.

“The player that I got asked to trade the most while I was there was Kevin Racal. More coaches called to ask if I’d be willing to trade him than any other player I’ve ever had, so that shows his value,” Compton noted.

Known for his exceptional off-ball awareness, Racal excelled at helping his teammates contain offensive threats, making him a defensive asset that other teams sought after.

Ping Exciminiano: The Lockdown On-Ball Specialist

On the other hand, Exciminiano’s defensive skill set made him a nightmare for opposing guards. As an elite on-ball defender, he could neutralize top scorers with relentless pressure and quick hands.

Compton emphasized how Exciminiano’s ability to guard opponents one-on-one made him a standout in his system.

The Key to Becoming an Elite Defender

Compton, who now spends his time conducting basketball clinics and writing books, stressed that great defenders are made through desire and commitment.

“For a lot of guys, it starts with desire. We usually grow up shooting, and that’s normal. But for the guys who develop the hunger to defend, that’s really big,” Compton explained.

Beyond individual skills, he emphasized the importance of team defense, urging players to be valuable contributors even without the ball in their hands.

“Defense is literally half of the game. It’s always funny when I say that because I wasn’t a very good defender, but I recognize its value,” he admitted.

“A good defender isn’t just about stopping the man in front of you. It’s also about being there for your teammates and executing a system that shuts down the opponent collectively.”

A Lasting Defensive Legacy

While Compton has stepped away from coaching, his insights into the game remain relevant. His recognition of Racal and Exciminiano as the best defenders he has coached speaks volumes about their impact on the defensive end.

In a league often dominated by offensive stars, these two players proved that defense can be just as valuable—and just as game-changing.
