Criss Cross, Cignal set for high-stakes clash ahead of Spikers’ Turf Finals

While some expect Criss Cross and Cignal to take it easy in their final semifinals matchup in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference, others see it as a battle for momentum before their highly anticipated best-of-three Finals trilogy.

With both teams holding identical 2-0 records, the 6:30 p.m. showdown at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum is technically a non-bearing match. However, with bragging rights and a psychological edge at stake, this could turn into an intense grudge match.

Criss Cross Eyes Semifinal Sweep

Criss Cross has been a dominant force this season, riding a 12-game winning streak while defeating Cignal twice along the way. Completing a perfect elimination and semifinals sweep would further cement their supremacy heading into the Finals.

Despite their strong run, Criss Cross knows Cignal remains a dangerous rival, especially after falling to them in last year’s Open and Invitational Finals. However, this conference, Criss Cross has been a different team, bolstered by a reinforced roster and depth while Cignal has struggled with injuries.

Cignal Aims for Confidence Boost

For five-time champion Cignal, the goal is redemption and momentum. A win over Criss Cross—even in a non-bearing match—could be a crucial confidence booster as they aim to reclaim the title.

Leading Cignal’s attack will be Steven Rotter, Louie Ramirez, and Wendel Miguel, all of whom need to break through Criss Cross’ suffocating defense. Meanwhile, Criss Cross’ offensive trio of Marck Espejo, Jude Garcia, and Nico Almendras will look to extend their dominance.

Espejo Faces Former Team

Adding another layer of intrigue is the presence of Marck Espejo, a former Cignal standout now suiting up for Criss Cross. Espejo’s familiarity with Cignal’s system and coach Dexter Clamor makes him a key player to watch.

“Sunday is a non-bearing game, but we still need to show our best so that we enter the Finals with high confidence,” said Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor, who previously coached Espejo from 2019 to 2023.

Battle for Third: Savouge vs. VNS-Laticrete

Before the Criss Cross-Cignal showdown, Savouge and VNS-Laticrete will clash at 4:00 p.m. in a preview of their own battle for third place.

Mark Calado and Shawie Caritativo are expected to lead Savouge, while CJ Segui and KC Culabat spearhead VNS-Laticrete’s charge in what promises to be another competitive matchup.

With both teams looking to gain momentum and send a message, Sunday’s action sets the stage for an explosive championship series.
