Criss Cross eyes perfect sweep in Spikers’ Turf Open Conference

Top meets bottom in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference as unbeaten Criss Cross looks to complete a double-round sweep against also-ran PGJC Navy today, March 19, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Criss Cross has won all nine of its matches so far and is expected to dominate the Sealions, who hold a 1-8 record. Despite being eliminated from semifinal contention, PGJC Navy will aim to end its campaign on a high note by pulling off an upset.

Criss Cross focused on strong finish

The King Crunchers have showcased resilience and maturity throughout the season, particularly in their two five-set victories over Savouge. As they chase their first-ever Spikers’ Turf title after falling short to Cignal HD Spikers twice last season, they remain focused on finishing the eliminations strong.

“This is a huge achievement for us. We’re really happy to be unbeaten so far, but as coach Tai (Bundit) always reminds us, we can’t be complacent. The elimination round isn’t over, and we still have work to do,” said Criss Cross star Jude Garcia in Filipino.

The King Crunchers will battle the Sealions at 3:30 p.m., hoping to carry their dominance into the round-robin semifinals of the tournament organized by Sports Vision and supported by Arena Plus and Mikasa.

Key players to watch

Criss Cross will once again rely on Garcia and Jaron Requinton, who delivered 27 and 22 points, respectively, in their last match against the Spin Doctors. Setter Ish Polvorosa will continue orchestrating the offense as they seek to extend their winning streak.

Meanwhile, PGJC Navy will look to John Ashley Jacob, Peter Quiel, and Owen Suarez to help snap their seven-game losing streak.

Semifinal race heats up

In the 6 p.m. match, VNS Griffins will try to secure a semifinal spot when they take on Savouge. Even with a loss, VNS can still advance if Alpha Insurance falls to Cignal HD Spikers in the 1 p.m. opener.

The Griffins will lean on CJ Segui and KC Culabat, while Savouge counters with Mark Calado and Shawie Caritativo, who are determined to bounce back after their recent loss to Criss Cross.

Meanwhile, the HD Spikers will look to continue their strong form against Alpha Insurance. Steven Rotter will lead Cignal’s attack, while the Protectors will pin their hopes on Edward Camposano, Vincent Nadera, and JJ Javelona to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

To steal the fourth and final semifinal spot, Alpha Insurance must defeat Cignal in either three or four sets while hoping that VNS loses in four sets or less.

With crucial matchups set for today’s final elimination round playdate, all eyes will be on Criss Cross, VNS, and Alpha Insurance as they look to solidify their spots in the semifinals.
