Basketball Africa League announces 12 teams for historic fifth season

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) has officially announced the 12 participating teams and game schedule for its historic fifth season, set to begin on April 5, 2025, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, Morocco. This milestone season will include six first-time BAL participants, including the league’s first-ever teams from Cape Verde and Kenya.

The 2025 BAL season will feature three group phases before culminating in the playoffs and finals at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, South Africa, in June. Defending champion Petro de Luanda (Angola) and 2022 champion US Monastir (Tunisia) return as the only two teams to have qualified for all five BAL seasons.

BAL 2025 Conferences and Teams

Kalahari Conference (April 5-13, Rabat, Morocco)

  • Al Ittihad (Egypt)
  • Fath Union Sport (FUS; Morocco)
  • Stade Malien (Mali)
  • Rivers Hoopers (Nigeria)

Sahara Conference (Dates TBA, Dakar, Senegal)

  • ASC Ville de Dakar (Senegal)
  • Kriol Star Basketball (Cape Verde) First-time participant
  • Petro de Luanda (Angola) – Defending champions
  • US Monastir (Tunisia) – 2022 champions

Nile Conference (Dates TBA, Cairo, Egypt)

  • Al Ahli Tripoli (Libya) First-time participant
  • APR (Rwanda)
  • Made by Basketball (MBB; South Africa) First-time participant
  • Nairobi City Thunder (Kenya) First-time participant

BAL 2025 Season Format

Each conference will play a 12-game group phase, where each team will face the other three teams in its conference twice. During the group phase, the home team in each country will play on every game day.

Opening Games – April 5, 2025 (Rabat, Morocco)

  • 4:00 p.m. GMT+1 – Stade Malien (Mali) vs. Rivers Hoopers (Nigeria)
  • 7:00 p.m. GMT+1 – Fath Union Sport (Morocco) vs. Al Ittihad (Egypt)

BAL Playoffs and Finals – June 6-14, Pretoria, South Africa

The top eight teams from across the three conferences will advance to Pretoria for:

  • Four seeding games
  • Eight-game, single-elimination playoffs
  • BAL Finals on June 14
