Cignal, Criss Cross dominate Spikers’ Turf Open Conference openers

Cignal HD Spikers showcased their championship experience in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference opener, overcoming a tough challenge from Alpha Insurance Protectors with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-23 victory at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Friday, February 21.

After cruising through the first two sets, Cignal faced resistance in the third, trailing 17-19. However, Steven Rotter’s crucial serving run, including three consecutive aces, fueled a 6-0 surge that put the HD Spikers in control. Despite a late push from Alpha Insurance, a mishit by JM Javelona sealed the win for Cignal.

Head coach Dexter Clamor acknowledged that his team still has areas to improve. “We committed too many unforced errors, but this was our first game. By the next match, we should be more in sync,” Clamor said in Filipino.

Cignal played without key scorer Louie Ramirez, who sat out due to a shoulder injury. Stepping up in his absence, Rotter led the team with 11 points, including five attacks, four aces, and two blocks. Jau Umandal added 10 markers, while team captain JP Bugaoan chipped in nine.

The HD Spikers will next face fellow tournament favorite Savouge on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
