POC rewards gold medal-winning Curling Team with cash incentives

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) expressed its deep appreciation for the Philippine men’s curling team, rewarding each member with cash incentives following their historic gold medal victory at the Ninth Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China. The team, based in Switzerland, was celebrated before their departure at a special gathering hosted by POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino at the New World Hotel in Makati City.

Each team member received $5,000 as a token of gratitude from the POC Executive Board, recognizing their commitment and sacrifices in representing the Philippines on the international stage.

“The incentive may not parallel their effort and dedication—and even the expenses they personally incurred—but it’s one small way for the POC to show its gratitude to the team,” Tolentino stated.

A Celebration of Excellence and Dedication

The curling squad, composed of Marc Pfister, Christian Haller, Enrico Pfister, Alen Frei, alternate and Curling Pilipinas president Benjo Delarmente, and Jessica Pfister, made a quick stop in the Philippines after their golden performance in Harbin. Their victory was not just a historic moment but also a testament to their self-funded journey, having invested significantly in international competitions leading up to the event.

Following the POC’s formal recognition, the team was also treated to a stay at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City, a symbolic tribute to their groundbreaking achievement in Philippine winter sports.

“It’s no joke funding your own participation in international events, especially in a blue-chip sport like curling,” Tolentino remarked.

Looking Ahead to the Winter Olympics

With their success in Harbin, the Philippine curling team now shifts its focus toward an even bigger goal—the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Tolentino confirmed that concrete steps are already being taken to help the team, along with other Filipino winter sports athletes, secure qualification.

“The path to Milano Cortina has become clearer, and on to our goal of a first Winter Olympics medal,” Tolentino added.

This milestone victory signals a new era for Philippine winter sports, proving that the country can compete—and win—on the global stage.
