Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino has expressed profound sadness over the tragic death of obstacle sports racing (OCR) champion Mervin Guarte and called for a swift resolution to the case.
“He’s a big loss to Philippine sports, for obstacle sports racing and athletics in particular,” Tolentino said on Wednesday. “I am hoping that the crime would be solved soon.”
Guarte’s Achievements in Sports
Mervin Guarte, a decorated athlete, was a pivotal member of the gold medal-winning men’s relay team in OCR during the Cambodia 2023 Southeast Asian Games. Prior to his OCR success, Guarte earned silver medals in the 1,500-meter and 800-meter events at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia as a track athlete.
Guarte also served as an Airman First Class in the Philippine Air Force and was a respected member of the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA), where he began his career as a national athlete.
The Tragic Incident
The 33-year-old champion was fatally stabbed early Tuesday morning while he was sleeping in the sala of a friend’s house in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
Tolentino assured that he will reach out to Calapan City Mayor Malou Flores-Morillo and Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Hyn Dolor to ensure a thorough investigation into the crime.
Condolences and Loss to the Sporting Community
The Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation, led by its president Atty. Al Agra, also mourned the loss of Guarte. Tolentino shared his grief with the organization and reiterated Guarte’s significant contributions to Philippine sports.
“This is not just a loss for OCR, but also for athletics in general,” Tolentino emphasized, reflecting on Guarte’s inspiring journey as an athlete and member of the armed forces.
The sporting community now stands united in mourning the loss of a national hero and hopes for justice to be served promptly.
