The 11th BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games officially kicked off on Sunday, December 1, at the Edward S. Hagedorn Coliseum in Puerto Princesa City, despite the rainy weather. The opening ceremony was a vibrant display of cultural unity, featuring athletes from across the region and showcasing the spirit of cooperation and friendship that defines the annual event.
The parade of athletes added a festive atmosphere to the occasion, with criminology students from Palawan State University (PSU) and local dance groups performing to the delight of the more than 700 athletes, coaches, and officials in attendance. Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard Bachmann, along with Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron and BIMP-EAGA Facilitation Centre head Susan Pudin, were on hand to officiate the event. Bachmann emphasized the positive impact the games would have on the cultural and economic partnerships between the participating nations, stating, “We are committed to strengthening our cooperation and solidarity as we set a unified goal of growth and development within our region.”
“Let the lessons from these games inspire you to make a positive impact in your communities,” Bachmann added. “You are little ambassadors from your home countries, cheer for one another and let the spirit of BIMP-EAGA shine through your actions, humility, and goodwill,” said Susan Pudin, reinforcing the unity of the nations involved.
Mayor Bayron echoed the call for friendly competition and integrity: “Together we can make this event a celebration of friendship, collaboration, and sheer aspiration. To the athletes, I encourage you to compete with passion, integrity, and respect for one another.”
