The Cignal HD Spikers delivered a commanding performance at the Ynares Sports Arena, defeating the VNS Griffins in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17, during the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference on Friday, November 22.
Riding a five-game win streak, the HD Spikers improved to 6-1 in the standings, solidifying their hold on second place and inching closer to securing one of the two coveted semifinal slots. The DN Steel FEU Ultras clinched the first semifinal berth earlier in the day with a decisive victory over the EcoOil La Salle Green Oilers.
Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor acknowledged the need for consistency, noting, “Marami pa rin kaming unforced errors. This game wasn’t a rest day but more of load management for our first six. We’re preparing hard for our upcoming matches.”
The HD Spikers face a challenging weekend, with a pivotal match against the undefeated Ultras on Sunday and another tough encounter against the Navy Sealions on Nov. 29.
Key Performers
Nas Gwaza, a former Best Middle Blocker, led the HD Spikers with a game-high 13 points, while Jau Umandal contributed 12 points in just two sets. Steven Rotter and Mark Calado added nine and eight points, respectively, in a dominant team effort.
“This game was crucial for us to stay on track for the semifinals,” Gwaza remarked, emphasizing the team’s championship aspirations.
On the other side, the VNS Griffins fell to 3-5, officially bowing out of semifinal contention. CJ Segui and Roderick Medino tried to keep the Griffins afloat with 12 and nine points, respectively, but the younger squad struggled against the veteran HD Spikers.
What’s Next for Cignal?
Cignal needs just one win in their final two games to lock in their semifinal spot. With the competition heating up, the HD Spikers are focused on maintaining their momentum and securing their place in the Final Four.
