Criss Cross King Crunchers delivered a thrilling four-set victory against the previously undefeated DN Steel-FEU Ultras, with scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-21. The Sunday, November 17, night clash at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig solidified the King Crunchers’ semifinal push in the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference.

The Crunchers rebounded from an error-laden first set with a masterful blend of power and precision. Led by Open Conference MVP Jude Garcia, who tallied a game-high 19 points, including 14 attacks, four blocks, and an ace, Criss Cross showcased why they remain a formidable contender in the league. Garcia’s dual role as a player and assistant coach for the Ultras added an intriguing layer to the matchup.

“Nakatulong din na players ko sila. Kumbaga lahat ng ginagawa nila alam ko rin. Malaking factor din ‘yun,” Garcia explained, reflecting on his familiarity with the Ultras’ strategies.

Turning the Tide

After losing the first set due to numerous errors, the King Crunchers regrouped, focusing on minimizing mistakes and maximizing their offensive strengths. Veteran middle blocker Gian Glorioso, who contributed 14 points, credited the team’s resurgence to their discipline and adaptability:

“We got carried away in the first set with so many errors. From the second set onward, we settled down and played our game.”

With excellent coordination, Criss Cross fended off a determined Ultras squad, relying on clutch plays from Nico Almendras and Ysay Marasigan, who both added 11 points. Setter Ish Polvorosa also shone, dishing out 23 excellent sets that kept the offense flowing seamlessly.

Ultras’ Unbeaten Run Ends

For the DN Steel-FEU Ultras, the loss marked their first defeat after a six-game winning streak. Despite a valiant effort led by Dryx Saavedra (15 points) and contributions from Mikko Espartero, Doula Ndongala, and Mendoza, the team fell short against the seasoned Crunchers.

Still holding a league-best 6-1 record, the Ultras remain strong contenders, setting up a crucial showdown against the Cignal HD Spikers next Sunday.

Looking Ahead

The King Crunchers, now tied with Cignal HD at 5-1, will face Chichi DHTSI on November 27, aiming to secure a semifinal berth. With their renewed momentum and collective firepower, the Crunchers are firmly on track to achieve their tournament goals.

The thrilling clash between Criss Cross and DN Steel-FEU was a testament to the intensity and excitement of the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next stage of the competition.
