The Taiwan Glass Taifong Open 2024 launched with high energy as Thailand’s Runchanapong Youprayong and Australia’s Jack Thompson topped the leaderboard with outstanding rounds of eight-under-par 64. Both players finished with incredible birdie-eagle streaks, setting an exhilarating tone for the tournament at Taifong Golf Club.

Runchanapong, a rising star in his second year as a professional, completed his morning session with three consecutive birdies on holes 15 through 17 and an eagle on the par-five 18th. This brilliant finish positioned him as the clubhouse leader for much of the day.

As evening approached and darkness threatened to halt play, Jack Thompson surged with a similar momentum. Birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, followed by an eagle on 17 and a final birdie on the last hole, matched Runchanapong’s impressive score. Thompson, reflecting on the round, said, “I can’t remember the last time I played like that. Finishing birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie—it really helps.”

Among other top contenders, Thailand’s Danthai Boonma shot an impressive 65, while Canadian Jared Du Toit finished with a solid 66. Heavy morning fog delayed the start by over an hour, resulting in 33 players needing to complete their rounds the following day.

Reflecting on his round, Runchanapong, who qualified through last year’s Asian Tour Qualifying School, expressed relief at his improved putting: “I have been struggling with my putter, so it was good to see a few putts rolling in today.” He also shared his excitement at reuniting with his former coach and current tournament director, Krirkchai Boonprasert.

Thompson, the former Asian Tour Qualifying School winner, is fighting to retain his spot on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit. “This is the kind of round I needed to have a chance,” he stated, optimistic about his position going forward.

With Boonma riding the wave of strong recent performances and the defending champion Suteepat Prateeptienchai also in contention, day two at the Taiwan Glass Taifong Open is shaping up to be just as thrilling. Golf fans can anticipate fierce competition as players continue their pursuit of victory in this prestigious Asian Tour event.
