HD Spikers Rally Past D’Navigators to Stay in Tournament Hunt

The Cignal HD Spikers showcased resilience and composure under pressure, securing a straight-set victory over D’Navigators Iloilo in a gripping Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference match on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena. Despite moments of struggle, Cignal finished strong with a 25-16, 25-23, 26-24 scoreline, marking their third consecutive win since their narrow five-set loss to the Savouge Spin Doctors, now boasting a solid 4-1 record.

D’Navigators fought valiantly, especially in the later sets, but ultimately succumbed to a fifth consecutive defeat. After a shaky start in the first set, the Iloilo team regrouped and mounted competitive plays in both the second and third frames. Their efforts pushed Cignal to the edge in the third set, where they held a 24-22 lead, looking poised to extend the match.

However, unforced errors in critical moments allowed the HD Spikers to capitalize. In the third set, Coach Dexter Clamor opted for a rotation with his second six, which initially seemed to give D’Navigators the upper hand as they surged to a 22-19 advantage. Yet, after an off-the-block hit from Steven Sta. Maria brought D’Navigators to set point, miscues hampered their momentum, leading to a thrilling Cignal comeback. Jau Umandal and Martin Bugaoan stepped up in the final points to close the set and secure the win.

Reflecting on the performance, Clamor shared his confidence in his team’s depth: “Actually nung third set kasi ginamit namin ‘yung second six. So dapat laging ready, kasi ‘yung team na ‘to equally talented players eh. Dapat lang ‘yung second stringers isipin nila kapag gagamitin sila is to contribute,” he said. “Ganun ‘yung tiwala ko sa kanila na magde-deliver sila.”
