The 8th Philippine National Para Games (PNPG) has officially returned, signaling renewed dedication to inclusivity and support for athletes with disabilities. Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard Bachmann, a firm advocate for equal treatment of all athletes, and Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go celebrated the event’s comeback at the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, joined by Philspada-NPC Philippines President Michael Barredo.
After a five-year hiatus, the PNPG is back from November 11 to 14, featuring over 900 participants across nine sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, boccia, chess, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, and wheelchair basketball. Venues across Rizal Memorial and PhilSports are set to host the events.
“Our goal is to promote Para sports development and foster inclusion,” shared Barredo, who was joined by PPC Secretary-General Goody Custodio and Head Coach Joel Deriada during their visit to the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum.
The opening ceremony, scheduled for 4:00 p.m., will feature two-time Paralympian Jerrold Pete Mangliwan leading the Oath of Sportsmanship, while Luis Mark Abella will deliver the Oath of Professionalism. Bachmann and Barredo will jointly declare the Games open, marking a significant milestone for disability sports in the Philippines.
The PNPG, last held in 2019 in Malolos, Bulacan, was postponed due to COVID-19. Thanks to the PSC’s commitment, this eighth staging provides an essential platform for differently-abled athletes to showcase their skills. Custodio noted the wide reach of this year’s event, with athletes from 72 cities and provinces participating.
“We aim to instill the values of courage, discipline, and equality through sports,” added Barredo, a former PSC commissioner. For Coach Deriada, the PNPG is also an avenue to identify potential athletes for the national Para team: “It’s a life-changing experience for many, a chance for our athletes to step out of their comfort zones and engage in healthy competition.”
The return of the Philippine National Para Games not only celebrates athletic excellence but also reaffirms the nation’s commitment to inclusive sports.
