Far Eastern University-DN Steel made a powerful statement in their debut match at the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference, securing a commanding win over Chichi DHTSI in four sets: 25-16, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19. The match, held at the Ynares Sports Arena on Friday, October 18, showcased FEU’s readiness and strength as they transition to the men’s premier league of Sports Vision.
Coming off their recent victory in the V-League Collegiate Challenge against De La Salle University, the Tamaraws continued their momentum with a well-rounded performance. Despite a resilient effort from Chichi DHTSI, especially in the third set where their improved attacking and blocking allowed them to capitalize on Tamaraws’ errors, FEU remained unfazed.
Jelord Talisayan’s wide crosscourt hit granted Chichi the third set, and a crucial block by Rafael Del Pilar on Talisayan extended the match. However, FEU quickly regrouped, taking control of the fourth set with a solid 8-3 lead and maintained their dominance to close out the match.
“Actually, if you look at the movements, everyone gave their best effort despite being in the loading period again. We deloaded during the V-League Finals, and now we’re loading again, so the players’ bodies are a bit sore,” said FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo, reflecting on his team’s physical state. Despite the strain, he emphasized their focus on gaining valuable experience.
“Our goal here is really the experience we can gain, but if we get the opportunity to make it to the top four, that’s even better, right? That’s why we’re here—to take away the lessons we can from Spikers’ Turf,” he added.
FEU’s offense was well-distributed, with five players scoring double figures. Jelord Talisayan led with 14 points in three sets, followed by Mikko Espartero with 13 points. Dryx Saavedra and Lirick Mendoza both added 12 points each, while Chad Absin contributed 11 points in just two sets.
Defensively, Vennie Ceballos excelled with 15 excellent receptions and 10 digs.
Looking ahead, FEU will face the D’Navigators Iloilo on Sunday, continuing their campaign at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. On the other hand, Chichi DHTSI, now with an 0-2 record, saw Christian Alicante leading their scoring efforts with 15 points, while Jonathan Sorio added 12 points. The Titans are preparing for a tough matchup against the 2024 Open Conference champions, Cignal, set for Tuesday at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.
