Angeline Poyos delivered a clutch performance, scoring 22 points to propel the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses to a hard-fought victory over the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers, 25-16, 19-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-12. The win extended UST’s unbeaten streak in the V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge at Paco Arena in Manila.

Despite losing two consecutive sets for the first time this season, the Golden Tigresses remained composed, relying on Poyos’ heroics to counter Wielyn Estoque’s explosive 31-point effort for the Lady Blazers. The victory marked UST’s fourth consecutive win in the seven-team tournament organized by Sports Vision.

“Maganda, at least naka-recover kami,” said UST head coach Kungfu Reyes, praising his team’s resilience. “We emphasized to the players the importance of controlling what we can control and maintaining composure.”

Trailing 4-6 in the fifth set, UST leaned on Poyos and middle blocker Pia Abbu, who sparked a crucial 5-1 run to take a 9-7 lead. Jonna Perdido then contributed with a key crosscourt hit, followed by a game-winning service ace.

Earlier, UST capitalized on St. Benilde’s errors in the fourth set to level the match, setting up a thrilling decider. Despite a dominant third set by the Lady Blazers, highlighted by a 15-4 run led by Estoque, UST’s early attacking prowess and Poyos’ all-around performance secured the comeback victory.

Poyos finished with 18 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, along with 10 excellent digs and six receptions. Perdido and Regina Jurado also made significant contributions, scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively.

UST will next face Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights on September 4. Meanwhile, St. Benilde, now with a 2-3 record, will look to bounce back against the Lyceum of the Philippines U Lady Pirates on September 11.
