Bagunas Leads PH to Historic win in SEA V-League Against Vietnam

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, the Philippines secured a momentous victory in the Southeast Asian (SEA) V-League, defeating Vietnam 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. This win marks a significant milestone for Alas Pilipinas, breaking their streak of losses in the young league and setting a promising tone for the future.

Bagunas Shines Early, Team Effort Seals the Deal

Bryan Bagunas, one of the Philippines’ top volleyball stars, set the tone early with his powerful serves and explosive attacks. His leadership on the court was instrumental in putting the team in a commanding position. Bagunas finished the match with a game-high 19 points, including 15 attacks, two blocks, and two aces, showcasing his all-around prowess.

Bagunas’ early dominance was complemented by strong performances from his teammates. Michaelo Buddin and Louie Ramirez stepped up, with Buddin contributing 14 points, including nine attacks, three blocks, and two aces, while Ramirez added 11 points, all from attacks. Their combined efforts ensured that the Philippines stayed ahead, even as Vietnam fought back in the third set.

A Statement Win Under Coach Angiolino Frigoni

The victory was a statement for Alas Pilipinas, especially as they embark on a new journey under Italian head coach Angiolino Frigoni. Frigoni’s approach to player rotations and his emphasis on team effort over individual names paid off, as younger players rose to the occasion and delivered when it mattered most.

“Everybody has to be ready; we play with the players, not with the name on the shirt,” Frigoni said, reflecting on his philosophy. “The players have to play, it doesn’t matter if it’s their first time on the national team, for me it doesn’t matter.”

A Crowd-Pleasing Performance

The atmosphere at Ninoy Aquino Stadium was electric, with a sizeable crowd cheering for every point. The victory was particularly sweet for the fans, as it served as a form of redemption after the Alas Women’s heartbreaking straight-sets loss to Vietnam in the Challenger Cup earlier this year.

The win also represents the Philippines’ first-ever victory in the SEA V-League, following a challenging inaugural season last year where they were unable to secure a win in two legs.

Looking Ahead: Philippines vs. Indonesia

The excitement doesn’t end here. Alas Pilipinas will face another tough challenge as they take on Indonesia in their next match. Vietnam, on the other hand, will look to bounce back as they go up against Thailand on Saturday.

With momentum on their side and a renewed sense of confidence, the Philippines is poised to continue their strong performance in the SEA V-League. Fans and supporters are eagerly anticipating what comes next for this revitalized team under Coach Frigoni.
