Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Philippine sports after his resounding reelection last week. Hosting a fellowship and Christmas party at Hotel Okura Manila in Pasay City, Tolentino emphasized the importance of unity and the Olympic motto: “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together.”
“Let us continue to strive for greater heights in the spirit of teamwork and perfection,” Tolentino told the gathering of nearly three dozen national sports association leaders.
Gratitude for a Historic Year
Tolentino expressed his heartfelt appreciation to POC members for their dedication and hard work in shaping Philippine sports throughout the year. Under his leadership, the POC has bridged two Olympics—Tokyo 2020 and the upcoming Paris 2024—highlighted by the country’s historic gold medals: Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo’s weightlifting gold and Carlos Yulo’s double victories in gymnastics.
“Together, we have overcome challenges, celebrated victories, and strengthened our commitment to supporting our athletes and our nation,” Tolentino said.
A Team Effort: Key Leaders Celebrate
The event saw attendance from various leaders and athletes who play pivotal roles in Philippine sports. Among them were:
- Newly-elected POC auditor Donaldo Caringal (volleyball)
- Executive Board members including Leonora Escollante (canoe-kayak-dragon boat) and Leah Gonzalez (fencing)
- Olympic boxing medalists Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Felix Marcial
- Heads of key associations, such as Richard Lim (karate), Brian Benjamin Lim (esports), Karen Caballero (sepak takraw), and Charlie Ho (netball)
These leaders represent the diversity and strength of Philippine sports, spanning traditional disciplines and emerging categories like esports and pickleball.
A Renewed Mandate for Progress
Tolentino secured an overwhelming 45 out of 61 votes during the POC elections, underscoring the trust and confidence of the Philippine sports community in his leadership. His vision focuses on furthering the development of athletes and national sports programs to achieve greater success in international competitions.
As preparations for Paris 2024 intensify, Tolentino vowed to continue fostering collaboration among sports leaders and athletes to maintain the Philippines’ momentum on the world stage.
“Thank you for your unwavering passion and service,” Tolentino said, closing his speech with a call for unity and excellence.
