Australia made an impressive entrance into the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup by handing Alas Pilipinas a tough five-set defeat on Sunday at the Candon City Arena on Sunday, June 7. The visitors displayed composure in crucial moments to emerge with a hard-earned victory in one of the tournament’s most competitive atches so far.

The result improved Australia’s record while dropping the Philippines to 1-1 in the competition. Despite a spirited comeback from Alas Pilipinas, the Australians found enough answers late in the match to secure the win.

A packed crowd provided a lively atmosphere throughout the contest, with supporters rallying behind the home team from start to finish. The match showcased the intensity and quality of volleyball expected from two determined squads.

Australia withstands challenge

Australia opened the match strongly and claimed the first set before the Philippines responded in impressive fashion. Alas Pilipinas captured the next two sets and appeared poised to complete a comeback victory.

The visitors, however, regrouped in the fourth frame and regained control through balanced offense and disciplined play. Australia carried that momentum into the deciding set, where it maintained its composure during critical stretches.

Caitlin O’Dea led the Australian charge with 17 points, combining offensive production with a strong presence at the net. Lara Maric added 16 points and contributed across multiple facets of the match to help guide her team to victory.

Ella Schabort and Anni Tang each scored 12 points, while Chloe Walker chipped in 10. The balanced attack proved vital as Australia weathered several rallies from the home side.

Australia coach Russell Borgeaud acknowledged the challenge posed by the Philippines and praised the atmosphere created by the local crowd.

“To control the crowd you have to control the ball. When we can control the ball and win some points, it keeps the crowd a little bit quieter,” Borgeaud said.

“But having said that, the crowd, they’re a beautiful crowd. They make a very positive noise, they’re not cheering against us, they’re cheering for their team as they should, and that’s always a fun crowd to play in front of.”

Solomon shines for Philippines

Alyssa Solomon delivered another standout performance for Alas Pilipinas despite the loss. The national team standout finished with 23 points and consistently provided scoring throughout the match.

Nina Ytang contributed 13 points and continued to make her presence felt on both ends of the court. Team captain Alyssa Valdez also reached double figures with 11 points as the Philippines fought to stay within striking distance.

The defeat ended the Philippines’ early momentum following its successful opening match in the tournament. Still, the team showed resilience by recovering from an opening-set loss and pushing the match to a deciding fifth set.

For Borgeaud, the victory carried additional significance given the history between the two programs.

“It’s been a long time since we beat the Philippines,” he said. “I expected it to be very tight, we knew it would be a difficult game.”

As the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup continues, both teams will look to build on the lessons learned from a match that provided one of the tournament’s most entertaining contests.
