Exhausted from a grueling 32-hour journey from Manila to South America, the brave young squad of Alas Pilipinas U17 is stepping onto the court ready to pull off an epic upset. The team enters the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship facing a monumental task right out of the gate in Chile, with action running from August 6 to 16.

Their campaign kicks off against world No. 1 and defending champion China at Liceo Mixto San Felipe. Despite the heavy travel fatigue and formidable competition, the Philippine team enters the tournament armed with a classic “David versus Goliath” mindset and high spirits.

Philippine Ambassador to Chile Celeste Vinzon-Balatbat gave the national youth squad an immediate boost by hosting them for a comforting lunch upon arrival. Drawing from her personal perspective as a mother of a student-athlete, Balatbat offered inspiring words to reset the team’s energy, emphasizing that sports build long-term character, grit, and discipline.

She reminded core players like Caera Celis, Jhaynna Love Bulandres, and Irish May Mahinay that learning to face setbacks with grace is essential for growth. Pledging to support the team directly from the stands, Balatbat cheered on the young athletes by reminding them that while their opening opponent is strong, underdogs always have a fighting chance.

Targeting an Upset in Pool B Action

Supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, and Asics, the national squad boasts a determined lineup eager to make its mark on the global stage. The team features Princess Khaira Manzano, Frances Dianne Ramos, Resty Jane Olaguir, Jello Andrea Mauricio, Nadeth Faye Herbon, Megan Yesha Hernandez, Xyz Ellen Rayco, Sharina Rhyza Lleses, Cristina Madela Gale, Jhenica Sadia, and Taj Arkhea Teves.

Following venue familiarization and swift recovery from their marathon flight, Alas Pilipinas turns its full focus to the pool stage. Beyond their opening battle with top-ranked China, the squad will continue its Pool B campaign against Mexico, Peru, Tunisia, and Venezuela in pursuit of a spot in the knockout rounds.
