During discussions tied to the ongoing 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, Sanya Asian Beach Games chef de mission Donaldo “Don” Caringal, and event executive Ramon “Tats” Suzara aligned on a shared vision for Cebu’s hosting success. Cebu hosting plan gains momentum from international benchmark

Suzara highlighted that the Philippines should not be underestimated as a host nation, pointing to the country’s creativity, hospitality, and entertainment culture as key strengths. He said early conceptual planning is already underway, with Cebu positioned to deliver a distinctive experience for athletes and visitors in 2028.

He also stressed the importance of early coordination with Cebu stakeholders and media partners to strengthen sports tourism promotion. According to him, sustained preparation will be critical in ensuring that the Philippines matches or exceeds international hosting standards set by recent editions of the Games.

Gregorio added that Cebu’s hosting identity will be uniquely Filipino, combining cultural presentation with modern sporting infrastructure. He described the 2028 edition as a landmark moment for the province, which is expected to stage its biggest international sporting event to date.

Officials also drew inspiration from China’s current hosting of the Asian Beach Games, particularly its use of integrated hotel and resort hubs for athletes and media. Gregorio noted that Cebu’s expanding infrastructure makes a similar model achievable in the Philippines.

Early preparation seen as key to successful delivery

Sports leaders agreed that preparation must begin well ahead of schedule to ensure smooth execution. Gregorio pointed to an approximate 18-month focused preparation window as a critical period for planning, coordination, and infrastructure alignment.

Caringal and Suzara supported this timeline, emphasizing that collaboration between national agencies and local organizers will determine the success of the hosting effort. They also noted alignment with Philippine Olympic Committee leadership in ensuring international standards are met.

The 2028 Asian Beach Games in Cebu is expected to bring together athletes from around 45 nations, marking the Philippines’ first time hosting an Olympic Council of Asia event. Officials believe this will significantly boost the country’s sports tourism profile.

Gregorio also reiterated that expectations extend beyond hosting duties, stressing that Filipino athletes must also deliver strong performances on home soil. He emphasized the importance of national pride in both organization and competition.
