Adamson University regained its wings after a disastrous first set to take down University of Santo Tomas, 11-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Arena, Saturday, Mar. 25.

The Lady Falcons swept their elimination round head-to-head against the Tigresses, but unlike the first-round straight-set sweep, the San Marcelino-based side had to grind it out this time.

Knotted at 21-all in the fourth frame, Kate Santiago went back-to-back before UST’s Renren Peñafiel answered with a drop ball but Regina Jurado’s attack in the ensuing play did not go over the net to send the game to match point, 24-22.

Then Trisha Tubu drilled an off-the-block kill to finish the match in one hour and 49 minutes.

“Hindi naman magpapatalo ang UST buti nakuha pa rin namin. First set medyo kulang buti nagrespond yung team second to fourth,” said Adamson head coach Jerry Yee.

The Golden Tigresses opened the game scorching hot, bagging a 25-11 first salvo but the Lady Falcons came back with a 25-21 second before romping UST in the third, 25-13.

Tubu produced 21 points on 15 attacks and six blocks, while Lucille Almonte and Santiago each had nine points.

Adamson also got help from UST, which committed a whopping 32 errors including 12 in the third and six in the latter half of the fourth.

The Lady Falcons rose to solo second at 6-2 while the Golden Tigresses saw their three-game winning run snapped and fell to 5-3.

Eya Laure had 17 points on five aces, 12 excellent receptions, and 11 digs in the losing cause. Imee Hernandez added 14 points as well.

UST will next face University of the East on Wednesday at SM Mall of Asia Arena while Adamson aims for three in a row next Saturday against Ateneo de Manila University at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
